  • Hello!

    Welcome to my blog!

I'm Laura and I am a wedding and portrait photographer located near Brighton.

This is my area to display the personal side of my work, some highlights of my recent professional work and my general mental meanderings! I hope you enjoy the images, and if you do, please do leave a comment!

I live on the edge of the small village of Newick in the East Sussex countryside, with my fiancé Ross and our two cats; Moose and Alan.

When my camera has been prised away from me, I love to watch a silly amount of films, (everything from 'Amelie' to 'The Breakfast Club'), wander around eBay, poke about in flea markets and can often be found pining after passing retro cars of various descriptions!

Please see my main website for details about wedding and portrait photography, and of course, feel free to get in contact!

Part One of Our Cider Making Escapades!

Ross always seems to be a man on a mission. Last time I left him unattended, I came back to find he’d built an enormous barbecue, with a rotating spit, powered by an old motorbike engine… (An old Honda CX500-CB for anyone interested). That project started when I whimsically said one day how much I’d like a hippy, bohemian half oil drum barbecue that I could paint flowers onto. His answer to this was the Megatron of all cooking equipment! Although it is very cool. He won’t let me paint flowers on it though.

This time, after having observed the amount of apples in the trees in our friend, Claire’s back garden, he decided to build a cider press! This is a documentation of the first weekend of the cider project, travelling down to Claire’s in Pevensey Bay and picking all the apples. Good times!:)

Loading up the Cider Wagon!

The apples we’ve scrumped *ahem* picked so far!

Grrrrr…

Beatrice, our navigator

The journey begins!

I’d like to point out at this point that it is a left hand drive campervan!

Me being a bit arty with long exposures

The next morning…

All the windfalls, too bruised for cider

This is Ross getting all scientific, using iodine to test for sugar levels to make sure the apples are ripe

Our awesome friend Claire, without her trees this would not have been possible!

This photograph was followed by me being told to “put the damn camera down and help!”

I didn’t:)

Tucking in to some of our crop!

Now they are stored for a couple of weeks before the pulping commences!

Wow I am impressed. I look forward to seeing the results of all this manual labour (drunken cider binge blog post please!).

Laura Sheppard - October 15, 2010 - 20:52

Of course! :)

Saw the word ‘cider’ and had to have a look! Some beautiful shots here Laura…and I love your van!

But the really important issue is…what are you going to call your brew?! x

Laura Sheppard - October 18, 2010 - 18:58

Thank you so much Sarah! We’re not sure yet, we thought about “Apple’s Revenge” maybe? There are going to be about 3 different brews so we’ll get thinking! Any suggestions?!

sarah - October 18, 2010 - 23:39

Oooh, not sure I can better ‘Apples Revenge’…I always go for brews like that…the ‘Gut Rots’ etc!

Looking forward to seeing more posts about it – and seeing it documented with your fab photos!

Laura Sheppard - October 19, 2010 - 00:43

Haha! Thank you, the best one we’ve come across was a Cornish cider called “Cripple Cock” with a picture of a cockerel on crutches on the bottle! Will keep everyone updated with the progress :-)

PAUL SAMPSON - October 19, 2010 - 08:23

My favourite pic is the one up an apple tree picking apples – excuse the pun

Laura Sheppard - October 20, 2010 - 20:42

Har har… ;-) Thanks

sarah - October 20, 2010 - 21:44

Ha…was going to mention ‘cripple cock’ but held back! My Dad drinks it. Think what you like of that.

Laura Sheppard - October 20, 2010 - 21:50

Haha! Good man

Charity Fashion Show, St. Wilfrid’s Hospice

Recently I was asked my my friend Majda to photograph the Charity Fashion show, being held by St. Wilfrid’s Hospice down in Eastbourne. It was great fun! There were some big names Such as Debenhams, Animal and BHS, and the hospice staff members put their own outfits together from the Hospice donations. I think theirs were some of the most interesting of the night as they actually had a real vintage feel to them!

Here are just a few:

Behind the scenes

Lots of pretty stalls to raise funds

This girl was really sweet and had such a cute war-time style!

The bridal gowns:)They are from Topaz Bridal

Liking his syle!

Muay Thai Boxing, Crawley

Recently I was asked to photograph a night of Muay Thai Boxing by my good friend, Ruth Ashdown, a title holder herself! She trains at the Lumpini Gym in Crawley. I must say, I was rather daunted by the prospect! I nearly got landed on a few times, although, I did have the best seat in the house, with a free Thai food dinner thrown in!

I’ve never done sport photography before, so it did feel like a bit of a baptism of fire, but once I got going, it was great fun! Not least because of all the half naked muscly men running around all over the place, (sorry Ross!) Here are a few of my favourites:

The atmosphere at the start was very exciting…

The ring girls were stunning

They have young fighters too, which is a bit weird… They’re not supposed to hit each other in the head, Ruth saw this shot and pointed out that the idea wasn’t to capture the illegal moves!

That’s gotta hurt! Look at the sweat fly ;o)

Excuse me, your foot appears to be in my face

The girls fight too!

Love this one! This boxer looked like he was carved from wood

And finally, the silly face contest

Black and White ‘Film-Style’ Urban Landscapes in Lewes, East Sussex

I still miss using film quite a lot, Ilford Pan 400 was my favourite film and my camera was a Canon AE-1 with a 50mm f1.8. I used to love spending hours in the darkroom, finally emerging at the end of the day all bewildered and a bit vague, smelling faintly of hamsters! These are digital (hence ‘film-style‘) but I’ve tried to recreate the look of some of my older work. They are taken in Lewes, East Sussex, a gorgeous, quaint, very old town near where I live. I’ll have a stall there this Saturday and Saturday the 14th of August selling photos, so if you’re in the area, come and say hello! (And feel free to buy a photo or two!)
